You’ve loved it. You’ve loathed it. Some days you thought you’d never get through it. But you’ve finally graduated as an Osteopath.
So what now?
Work for yourself? Work for someone else? Spread yourself about between several Practices? Stick with just one?
Are you just an income generating team member? Or are you valued, encouraged and supported?
Starting out by yourself after several years in a safe and supportive environment can feel a little scary. Making the right choice and right first move in your career is essential.
But what if you have to take a few hours here and half a session there? How can you get some mentoring and who do you go to for help? It’s something I hear often from those who’ve recently graduated as an Osteopath.
It is also the dilemma which Danny Orchard and Duncan Webster saw at first hand. Having taught Osteopathic techniques for years at the BSO and having a keen desire for much more research data being available to better promote the profession, these two decided to look at the problem head on.
Daring to dream big, Danny and Duncan sketched out an idea so audacious, it was breathtaking! This is something I challenge you to do too. Having a few general goals is great and something I encourage. But there should always be a BHAG to inspire your life, sitting out there in front of you, daring you to go on.
What’s a BHAG?!
It’s a BIG, HAIRY AUDACIOUS GOAL! It’s a ‘What if I achieved THAT?!’ kind of goal. How amazing would THAT be?
Especially if that outrageous goal not only benefits you but somehow empowers or inspires others.
So Danny and Duncan got to work. They called in all the favours they could, harnessed everyone they knew, pulled together all the resources they could lay their hands on and BEGAN grafting!
And that’s how you achieve success. Just a plan, a goodly dollop of passion and the drive to keep taking baby steps towards it. Every. Single. Day.
Believe in yourself and just go for it!
Because, when you follow your dreams, life is never dull, boring or pointless! There might be setbacks, difficulties or hurdles. But you keep that vision and you keep ploughing on, taking those tiny steps, certain in the knowledge that you will indeed find the tipping point where your dreams become your reality.
And if you’ve recently graduated as an Osteopath, dream big too but also choose your next move wisely. If you set out by yourself, get some good business development advice and marketing skills so that you reach your goals faster. If you choose to begin with Associate positions, ensure that you will be paid fairly and be properly supported on your early journey.
Excellent mentoring is vital
Whatever your path, put solid support systems in place to ensure you progress towards being the best Osteopath you can be. And be diligent with regard to getting helpful feedback to avoid slipping into bad habits.
If you wanted to get off to a great start and be involved with Danny and Duncan’s mentoring programme, I would recommend that you find out more here -> CORE Graduate Recruitment
Their once audacious dream is now their reality. The fabulous newly transformed parish hall in Upper Clapton, East London is not in some swanky suburb of London. Instead and rather refreshingly, CORE is now providing low cost and vital treatment to a largely low-income community who might otherwise get little help with their pain.
The CORE charity aims to combine detailed research with excellent patient care, along with indispensable mentoring to those team members who have recently graduated as an Osteopath.
And getting involved with this exciting and important new Osteopathic endeavour is something that one day you could look back on with huge pride.
