We don’t see the Old Boy’s grandchildren too often but when they do come over for a big family meal around the table, they are even more glorious than the last time we saw them. My own boys are 6ft plus now and I really miss marveling at their curious and enquiring minds as they fathomed out the microcosmic world they inhabited as toddlers.
Watching our grandson figure things out with his two and a half year old brain was so captivating. I had forgotten how interesting the tiniest ball or toy can be to them. Once he’d settled down after the shock of seeing us all again after a few weeks, he was chatty and engaging. His little sister is just 3 months old, impressively strong in her legs and very responsive to my ridiculously over-acted facial expressions!
Our business is like our child
Seeing their young delight in everything around them reminded me about young business too. We get excited about how we’re going to make a difference to our customers and community. We have great plans for our futures and what we want our baby business to achieve as it grows and matures.
Sometimes, however, we get bogged down in the daily grind of nappies and noses. We can lose sight of the end result, when tiredness and pressures remove the fun from the process. Some days it’s like telling their favourite bedtime story for the hundredth time whilst trying to maintain the same enthusiasm for the words and story we know so well.
How would Nanny McPhee sort your business out?
I guess my role in that case, is to be a kind of Nanny McPhee (with slightly fewer warts) and I stay for a while and see where little changes could be made or how fresh ideas could be woven into the daily routine. And even, perhaps, we’d add some new guidelines to help make faster progress towards great results and gurgling happiness.
So if Nanny McPhee gave your budding business the once over, where do you imagine she would sprinkle her magic? And how would she nurture it towards greater success and evolve it into the delightful creation it was always meant to be?
