Twitter or twaddle?

TwitterMany of you just don’t get Twitter! I hear things like, ‘I really don’t get it!’ or ‘Why would I use it?’ or ‘Who really goes on there?’

I have to admit that when I signed up a few years ago, I didn’t ‘get’ it either!  It’s not a great place to hang out if you’re verbose, I concluded.  But having said that, I also like brevity when in business mode; short sharp statements and then crack on with what needs doing.

So after a while I understood that it was more a medium for getting quick conversations going.  What I also discovered was that I was connecting with Osteopaths who weren’t to be found on Facebook or LinkedIn.  So I had another avenue to build relationships with prospective clients. And it wasn’t going to take all day or involve pictures of people’s kids and dodgy lunches!

Twitter is speedy!

Because you have to be succinct (140 characters or less) it makes you cut out the waffle and twaddle!  Make your point, add a link and whoosh! It’s done and dusted very quickly.  And understanding that one day made me realise that Osteopaths are very busy and have little time between appointments.  That’s why it works so well for you.

There are many ways of building relationships with people on Twitter, so I thought I would share a few ideas with you:

  1. And this is No 1. for a reason! Tweet your blogs! Not just once; there is a lifetime of use in a blog. (If you hate writing, then I can create bespoke blogs for you – I love it!) Use a scheduling tool to keep tweeting those blogs or get a plug in for the back of your website, set it up and let it go! Because I have clients across the globe, my blogs are posted every few hours, 24 hours a day!  And I’ll bet that there are still some of my blogs which you haven’t even seen yet!  Also, be savvy and tweet little quotes from your blog too.  A good blog is multi-purpose.
  2. Testimonials work very well too (though sadly not allowed in Australia). You can take a snippet of a longer testimonial and use that. Be sure to add quotes around it too.  This works well because it is called social proof ie somebody else said you were good! It’s like an arm’s length referral so make sure you’re using this to the max.
  3. Tips and advice. You have a wealth of knowledge about the body, taking care of it, do’s and don’t’s, healthy eating, stretches, warm up and cool down exercises, answers to frequently asked questions and more! What myths do you need to bust? What advice would help you to help them?  Again you can keep reposting this stuff because Twitter is the superhighway of social media and newsfeeds spin at an alarming rate!

Three things you didn’t know about Twitter!

  • The life of a Tweet is 24 minutes; then it’s so far down the newsfeed that it’s gone!
  • 500 million Tweets are posted every single day!
  • It’s the easiest place to hook up with important local contacts such as newspaper editors, local heroes/sportsmen or community figures.

Are we not hooked up on Twitter? Come and find me @GillyWoodhouse – you never know you might come across an interesting blog to entertain and inform you!
